Aindreas Scholz (IE/DE 1981) and Morvarid K. (IR 1982) both work around the theme of climate change. Scholz experiments with alternative and sustainable photographic processes to highlight the need to critically reflect on our daily carbon footprint. Morvarid’s project ‘This too shall pass’ deals with the impact of wildfires that are appearing all over the world and uses photography and the remains of burnt environments to present denial and stupefaction, but also acknowledgement and oblivion resulting from witnessing the results of the fires.
Vera van Almen (NL 1986) creates imagined and ethereal landscapes without the use of a camera, relying solely on light and shadow through the Van Dyke brown printing process. Her images invite viewers to reflect on the unseen and the unknown. Marco Tagliafico’s (IT 1985) ‘Arcipelago’ is a series of works originating from a single landscape photograph and turned into imagined landscapes with the use of a painted glass plate that acts as a screen, revealing only fragments of the image while other parts are obscured
Birgit Graschopf (AT 1978) focuses on the inner worlds of the depicted figures and on psychological nuances. Her visual language oscillates between an atmosphere of the familiar and intimate, and that of the foreign and uncanny, which is enhanced by Graschopf printing her images on coloured sandpaper and concrete slabs.
And finally, Gert Motmans (BE 1972) balances between figurative and abstract, complexity and a deceitful simplicity. In his collages he explores memory, fragility and a longing for familiarity and nostalgia.
