Arles 2020 : Open Walls : Some Portraits

Preview

Arles 2020 day to day by Thierry Maindrault

The “Open Walls Arles 2020” was already launched when the disruption of the global health crisis took hold. More was needed to discourage Julia de Bierre, who against all odds decided to offer the discovery of the winning works to the public of Arles, as planned.

In her large house/gallery, the photographs, printed in a hurry and at the last hour, are arranged on the walls of the large living room. The parade of many visitors was permanent all summer, a nice reward for her love of photography and her stubbornness.

I have selected some portraits for you which deserve our interest for a few moments. All those which are selected tell us something which impacts the life of the models or which challenges the reader on his way of discovering an image. We do not fit into a photograph, we enter an atmosphere, we share a feeling, we notice distress, we commune with an idea, we dream about other worlds.

For your reflection, I have juxtaposed  portraits where the subject is alone without any decoration and portraits positioned inside their natural environment or a set up stage.

Summer is coming to its end, Arles 2020 is slowly starting to fade; but, after a few more beautiful exhibitions, I will come back to this very special adventure because it is unprecedented.
