Arles 2016 : “SYSTEMATICALLY OPEN?” Untitled : Curator Elad Lassry

Preview

For his “Untitled” contribution, Elad Lassry implicitly asks, ‘What kinds of engagements are possible with pictures?’ Lassry’s project, a series of photographs depicting dental procedures and extreme close-up images of teeth and gums, addresses a paradox that has attenuated our relationship to medical imagery. Once such images are apprehended outside of their mechanical or clinical context, their original visual qualities seem to shift.

Elad Lassry was born in Tel Aviv, Israel in 1977. He earned a BFA in art and film/video from the California Institute of the Arts, Valencia, in 2003, and an MFA from the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, in 2007. Lassry positions his photographic works as “pictures,” entities that operate simultaneously as both objects and images. In doing so, he shifts their relationship to the viewer, inviting a broader examination of how photographs are seen and understood. His work has appeared in many international exhibitions, including solo shows at Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam (2014), The Kitchen, New York (2012), PAC , Milan (2012), Rat Hole Gallery, Tokyo (2012), the Contemporary Art Museum, St. Louis, Missouri (2010), Kunsthalle Zurich, Switzerland (2010) and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York (2009). This October, he will present a solo exhibition at Vancouver Art Gallery curated by artist Jeff Wall.
