Arles 2016 : Fotohaus I Parisberlin

Preview

To repeat last year’s success, FOTOHAUS I PARISBERLIN this year showcases several exhibitions offering a broad panorama of the German and French artistic scene: ParisBerlin aims at bringing together works centered on the theme of game and play, and present some new discoveries.

To this end, the collective exhibition DAS SPIEL (GAME / PLAY)—a project of the ParisBerlin>fotogroup photographers and their guests—extends carte blanche to the La Collection agency specializing in distributing works of art and photographs, which will present surrealist images by Lucien Lorelle alongside contemporary work by Caroline Maufroid, Clément Guillaume, and Sébastien Pons. Designed as a cabinet of curiosities, DAS SPIEL presents over fifteen photographs on the theme of game and play in photography (both in terms of technique and subject matter).

Caroline Maufroid, la Collection / Double games

What do we remember about our daily lives? What is there left of our things, places and surroundings when we close our eyes and try to recall feelings, sensations or atmosphere? Caroline Maufroid retains these moments through everlasting details that bring back emotions, memories and correspondences. This is the double memory game of remembrance and appearance, this tackling of real and false that shapes Caroline’s art. These little pieces weave their own stories, they nurture some secret and surprising relationship.

Claudia Balsters – YES, mother, I shall become A BIRD! (2016  – ongoing series)

Building on her work Down the Rabbit Hole Claudia Balsters continues to deal in her new ongoing series YES, mother, I shall become A BIRD! with the human desire to transform herself, only this time she is focusing on  transformation into birdlike creatures. Visible is not only this longing for an illusive “as-if” but also its limitations. The constructing element of disguise (or exposure) that masks and costumes always imply, is picked up by using various techniques of photography: colour and black and white, analogue and digital, vernacular photography next to her own as well as collages.

Clément Guillaume, la Collection / De Haut

Silent director of a shadow theater, Clément Guillaume directs the acting of his puppets, without them knowing it, moving silhouettes, still figures.
Out of these silent dialogs and solitary thoughts seen from high, he is the still puppeteer, wireless narrator, letting go its characters over the water, dark actors of a moment playing a scene apart from their double.

Lucien Lorelle, la Collection / Curious games

Lucien Lorelle, in the line of the surrealist movement but a little aside from it, never stopped developping researches for his personal creations especially after World War II: solarisations, impressions, cropping, creating  “sandwiches” by putting together  a photograph and a virgin negative but engraved, mixing drawings and photographs.  One can find this creative and mischievous spirit down in the heart of his work when he wrote himself on some of the negatives sleeves “Curious games”. By game, Lucien Lorelle awakes the still objects and puts the living ones to sleep.
