This American photographer unearthed medical artifacts from Philadelphia’s Mütter Museum and shot them against a black background. Like an anatomy archive, this book reveals a large number of medical student manuals, tools, bones, microscopes and formaldehyde jars filled with human body parts.
In these black-and-white photographs, the placement of each object is so meticulous that one feels as if a scientist or professor were about to get down to work. As always, Andrea Baldeck expertly marries curves and lines. Although the access granted to these historic documents and instruments is admirable, the homogeneity of the photographs is somewhat unfortunate, with the photographer exercising perhaps too much control over the compositions. The same is true for the recent works of the Canadian photographer Jack Burman. The eye is surprised by these lifeless, floating fetuses. They raise questions while stimulating the imagination. It is one of the rare moments where shock outweighs the monotony.
