Amsterdam : Russian House at Schilt Gallery

Preview

The Russian House exhibition is a unique collection of images of life in the final years of the Soviet Union and the Russia of today, encompassing works from five exceptionally gifted photographers: Sergey Chilikov, Lucia Ganeva, Vadim Gushchin, Sergey Maximishin and Igor Moukhin.

Sergey Chilikov (1953) While working as a philosophy lecturer in Yoshkar-Ola, Chilikov started taking photographs on a professional basis in 1976. Far from the power centre in Moscow and free from conflicts with the institutions of the day, his witty, playful and nonconformist style reveals an unusual and unfamiliar side of Russian life today and during the Soviet regime. Chilikov is one of the most influential photographers operating in contemporary Russia.

Lucia Ganieva was born in Russia and has lived in the Netherlands since 1993. Afterpursuing a career in fashion, she graduated cum laude in May 2007 from the Fotoacademie in Amsterdam. Her work has been awarded countless prizes and been exhibited all over the world. Schilt Gallery will be showing Ganieva’s latest work, shot in a textile factory in Navololi, a small town on the Volga in a region that was once the home of a flourishing textile industry. In her own unique style, Ganieva lays bare the factory’s faded glory while portraying its typically Russian workers.

Vadim Gushchin (1963) has worked in Moscow as an artist since 1988. Inspired by his hero Kazimir Malevitsj, Gushchin takes everyday objects out of their context, thereby giving them new meaning. Guschin’s abstract work has been exhibited across the globe in a range of major museums.

Sergey Maximishin (1964) was born on the peninsula of Crimea and lives in Sint Petersburg. During his military service, he was appointed photographer for the Russian army on Cuba. After working as a physicist at the technical and scientific laboratory of the Hermitage, he chose in 1998 to devote himself full time to documentary photography. Maximishin’s work reflects the Russian tradition in art: formalist, but imbued with the drama and compassion of Russian realism. Maximishin has won multiple prizes for his work.

Igor Moukhin (1961) is a resident of Moscow and has been working as an independent photographer since 1989. After completing a photographic study of the lives of underground musicians in Soviet Russia, Moukhin developed a growing fascination for everyday life in the Soviet- and post-Soviet eras. With immeasurable patience, he has created a visual essay of his country in a period of crisis and opportunity. His works have been purchased by various museums.
