In 2006, photographer Alasdair McLellan embarked on a project to document the ceremonial soldiers of the British Army with their full support, for a feature in Arena Homme Plus magazine together with its then editor-in-chief, Jo-Ann Furniss.
As the tenth anniversary of the story approaches, the project has been revisited, and using previously published and unseen photographs has been collected into McLellan’s second book, Ceremony.
The UK’s ceremonial soldiers are rarely there just for show, they also have a long history of combat. McLellan’s photographs are a rare glimpse into the workings of the British Army as seen through the trappings of the ceremonial units of The King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery, Coldstream Guards and the Household Cavalry.
The images capture the soldiers as part of the famous Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace, and also off duty grooming their horses, prepping their uniforms, and at ease in their barracks. Ceremony is a document of both the ceremonial side of the British Army, and also the incredible discipline required to maintain its powerful and cherished traditions.
