At the beginning of the 20th century, they almost disappeared because there were only about 40 cranes left on the island. So a farmer had the idea to feed them corn for the cattle. A powerful eagle with black and white plumage and a hooked and bright yellow beak, the Steller’s eagle, or emperor eagle, is one of the largest raptors in the world: its wings, outstretched, can measure up to 2.50 m . This imposing bird can be found in eastern Asia, near rivers, where it can find abundant trout and salmon, which it feasts on. Daytime, Steller’s eagle watches for its prey from its perch, sometimes up to 30m above the water, then swoops in and grabs it with its powerful talons. Vulnerable species.
