Alain Ernoult : The Japanese Crane Parade

Preview

Every year in February, many birds gather on the island of Hokkaido in Japan, just across Siberia.

At the beginning of the 20th century, they almost disappeared because there were only about 40 cranes left on the island. So a farmer had the idea to feed them corn for the cattle. This was the first rescue. Unfortunately today, there are only 2,750 birds, about half of which are in Japan. The others can be found in China, Russia, Mongolia and Korea where they are in decline due to degradation of their breeding and wintering sites. It is a very elegant large wading bird. It is one of the largest birds in the world, it is 1.50m tall, has a wingspan of up to 2.50m and a weight of 10kg. But this bird remains incredibly graceful. The body is white and the wing tips and legs are black, and has a red crown at the top of its head. It is a revered iconic bird from the Hokkaido Island in Japan. It is a symbol of longevity and happiness. It is an endangered species …

A powerful eagle with black and white plumage and a hooked and bright yellow beak, the Steller’s eagle, or emperor eagle, is one of the largest raptors in the world: its wings, outstretched, can measure up to 2.50 m . This imposing bird can be found in eastern Asia, near rivers, where it can find abundant trout and salmon, which it feasts on. Daytime, Steller’s eagle watches for its prey from its perch, sometimes up to 30m above the water, then swoops in and grabs it with its powerful talons. Vulnerable species.
