Behind its leatherette cover, one finds in Ukraina Passport (13 x 5 cm) an example of what makes contemporary photography publishing so captivating. Created by Federico Clavarino, a young Italian photographer living in Madrid, Ukraina Passport’s content, form and layout combine to be just as powerful as the images within.

In these 100 pages (limited to 800 copies), Clavarino crosses, sometimes with accents in the style of Boris Mikhailov, a country torn between its Soviet legacy and its gaze turned towards the West. Most importantly, he outlines a zone that is suspended and surprised in its movement: we think of Paul Graham and Luigi Ghirri for their sense of the elliptical. But by focusing on human beings, often in close-up, it avoids taking too big of a distance.

From Soviet monuments to children playing on the seashore, there is a singular world in Clavarino’s Passport, one that serves both as a tale and an invitation.
