M.I.A. Gallery presents Underworld, a solo exhibition dedicated to the photography of Wayne Levin and his foresight of the Pacific Coast and Deep Ocean. Featuring more than a dozen of photographs of the submerged realm, Wayne Levin exposes us to an ongoing movement that he abruptly stops with a shot. He erupts in escapade to remind us of what may often slip our mind and through his eye develops a unique display of sentiment, admiration, enjoyment and perceptiveness beneath our surface. In here, we remain silent, observers of this floating theatre where men and animals inter-act.
The extensive attention and use of light represented in Wayne Levin’s Photography truly establishes a visionary insight of the Ocean World; emerging nostalgically and with an elegant beauty invigorates our curiosity of the unknown.
Wayne Levin received his B.F.A. in Photography from San Francisco Art Institute in 1979, thus, continuing to receive his M.F.A. from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York. After witch, Wayne Levin moved to Hawaii to teach at the University of Hawaii and open his own Photography Studio where he began researching and photographing the Pacific Island Coast and deep ocean waters.
In 1990 the release of Kaho`olawe: Na Leo O Kanaloa: A collaboration between Wayne Levin, Franco Salmoiraghi, David Ulrich and Roland Reeves, receives the Hawaii Book of the year of the world in 1996. The Photographs will be then featured across the Hawaii Island’s for the next two years.
The dedication and the passion for his art and the Ocean world leads to Wayne Levin’s First solo book called Through a Liquid Mirror which then went on to receive the Hawaii book of the year award in 1997.
His work is now featured at The Museum of Modern Art, New York; Museum of Photographic Art, San Diego; The Contemporary Museum, Honolulu; and the Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts. His work has been published in Aperture, American Photographer, Camera Arts, Day in the Life of Hawaii, Photo Japan, and most recently LensWork, among others.
