Vernissage à la MEP –par Molly Benn

This week, Joel Meyerowitz, Martial Cherrier, Diana Michener and a dozen other photographs selected for the tenth anniversary of the Images Magazine had their work on display at the Maison Européenne de la Photographie.

The Meyerowitz retrospective offers not only an important piece of the artist’s own history, but also that of 20th century photography. The show covers the full fifty years of his career, from the his first black-and-white snapshots to his famous color photographs. On a higher floor, we discover the work of Martial Cherrier. An ex-body builder, the artist takes his body as a subject. He sculpts it, photographs it, objectifies it. This narcissism is succeeded by a tragic, brutal awareness: there are limits to how much one’s body can be shaped. The violence of his images is reflected in the layout of the exhibition. The last room of the show presents the photographs hanging from meat hooks, and visitors are confronted with their own images in a mirror.
Finally, after viewing Diana Michener’s pictures, we find an exhibition in the basement celebrating the 10th anniversary of Images Magazine. Like a snapshot of contemporary photography, there are images from artists as diverse as they are thrilling.

What an exciting way for the MEP to kick off the year.
