The importance paid to the female eye in this first edition of the festival is highlighted by the decision to use the Prince’s Apartments at Palazzo Reale as the setting for a monographic exhibition on Vanessa Beecroft that brings together blow-ups of rare polaroids and sculptures, thereby summarizing, amid references and unexpected connections, the interdisciplinary nature of both the artist and the photographic medium.
Vanessa Beecroft, who currently lives and works in Los Angeles, is renowned for her innovative performances and the unconventional approach to image creation. Her works, which have been displayed internationally since 1993, are often provoking pieces or serve as a vehicle for social critique. Performance art is Beecroft’s choice of expression since the beginning: with a background firmly rooted in a classical heritage, she creates tableaux vivants often inspired by the painting and sculpture of the past. Her return to Milan, the city that in 2009 hosted Beecroft’s VB65 performance commissioned by PAC -” Padiglione d’Arte Contemporanea”, is an eagerly awaited comeback.
As part of her investigation into the female identity, Vanessa Beecroft develops her inquiry around such topics as the gaze, desire and alienation, exploring the theme of the female body via her sophisticated performances, drawings, photography, video art and sculptures. Her investigation dilates time and recombines it incorporating the forms of classical sculpture with the most contemporary vision.
