Here’s a magnificent video for Varúð of Sigur Rós, directed by Ryan McGinley. Since the release of their album Valtari in 2012, Sigur Rós fans across the world have been making tribute videos to accompany the group’s music. For the project Valtari, the Icelandic band invited a dozen filmmakers to produce videos for the album. After providing the filmmakers with a small budget, Sigur Rós gave them total artistic freedom. Participants include Ramin Bahrani, Alma Har’el and John Cameron Mitchell. “We never meant our music to come with a pre-programmed emotional response. We don’t want to tell anyone how to feel and what to take from it. With the films, we have literally no idea what the directors are going to come back with. None of them know what the others are doing, so hopefully it will be interesting.” –
Sigur Rós, May 2012 The weekend of December 7 – 9, a Valtari film experiment program collected 16 commissioned “official” and fan-created short films created to coincide with the album Valtari. The program screened on all seven continents (yes, including Antarctica) in not only in traditional cinema venues but rock clubs, hardware stores, hairdresser salons, and beyond. A special-edition DVD of the short films is expected to be released in February.
