Urbi&Orbi – 13th Sedan Photography Biennial

Preview

Every two years, Urbi&Orbi invites photographers and videographers from around the world to share their visions of the city. Since its creation in 2001, Urbi&Orbi has hosted the work of photographers such as Pentti Sammallahti, Stéphane Couturier, Thibaud Cuisset, Bernard Plossu, and Valérie Jouve in Sedan.

To disseminate the work of photographers and artists addressing issues related to the city, our lifestyles, and societal choices: urban planning, construction, resource conservation, identity, development, etc.
To involve the public in the creative process and guide them in discovering the biennial’s photographic projects and artists.
To strengthen the association with a local, national, and international network of stakeholders involved in the world of contemporary photography.
To support the production of contemporary photographic creations.

The general idea of this biennial revolves around the observation that our societies are becoming increasingly inward-looking, that relationships with others are increasingly mediated exclusively by small individual screens, that humanist values are being unraveled in favor of profit, that inequalities between social classes, between cities and the countryside, are growing ever wider, and that attention to the environment is blithely deteriorating, that “the habitability of the earth,” to quote Bruno Latour, is endangered for the first time in our history.

The argument of Château / for intérieur is to put into perspective the expression of power and authority represented by the castle, in the face of the relative fragility of the innermost states of mind (which comes from the Latin forum, the public square) of each individual, inviting encounters and poetic reverie.

The photographers gathered here enjoy becoming one with the world’s texture (air, water, forest, desert, city, people…), without denying its harshness and roughness, and exist in a form of empathy for people, light, and things.
