Ronnie Rains Bwire 2nd Place, People Mothers and Daughters Meet Nantale (Left) and Aisha (Right), who are lucky to attend the same Farm Field school and share seats in the same class as mother and daughter. Nantale wanted to go to school but her parents couldn’t afford it and so she married young. She believed that the hoe and garden were going to facilitate her childhood dream for her children, but never expected that an opportunity for an education would place her in the same classroom as her child.

Julius Ssekidde 3rd Place, People Light is Knowledge Light is the sun and the avenger of evil forces and darkness. Light is knowledge, purity and morality. A young girl passes between intersecting walls in the evening hours in Kibuye, a Kampala suburb.

Douglas Musunga Honorable Mention, People Coins for Tunes For over 10 years Alfred Onaba, who is blind, has been playing his guitar and singing religious songs on the streets of Kampala. Originally from Pakwach, he lives in Kyebando but hopes one day to return home to retire. Every day Alfred plays music for any donations that people can put in his bowl, and takes a cup of black tea and bread at Arua Park, or lunch when his collection allows it. Despite his blindness he is able to earn a living through his music, and sometimes his son Okwaye, also pictured here, joins him for the day.

Kagonyera Busingye 3rd Place, Sport Airborne Ugandan rally legend Ronald Sebuguzi’s car flies through the air as he powers across a bridge at the Pearl Of Africa Rally 2018. The Pearl Of Africa Rally is the biggest event in Uganda’s motorsport calendar, attracting not only local crews but also teams from across the region and as far afield as Zambia and elsewhere.

Richard Sanya Honorable Mention, Sport Express Fan Fans go wild as Express FC scores a crucial goal to escape being relegated to the FUFA Big League, during a match that was the most trying moment of the club’s 61 years of existence. The Red Eagles out-muscled a hard battling Masavu FC 1-0 at the lakeside Fisheries Training Institute playground in Bugonga, Entebbe, on the final day of the 2017/18 Uganda Premier League, May 25th 2018.

Moses Lemisa 1st Place, Urban Risky Children use a makeshift bridge to cross a water channel in Kikoni, Makerere III, in Kampala. Many neighbourhoods in the capital city are constructed informally, and open drainage is widely used to manage waste as well as the heavy water flows that come during rainy season, but these wide channels brimming with contaminated outflows provide hazards for residents as well as breeding grounds for disease.

Badru Katumba 3rd Place, Urban Raed Raed Isma Wandera rests on a chair in his one-room house in Kasubi, Kampala. Wandera graduated with a first class degree in Information Technology from Kampala University in 2016 and was the overall best student in his class, but he has failed to find a job. Raed is only one of a huge number of unemployed graduates, and the state is struggling to address this growing issue, with corruption and inefficiency eating away at funds that could have been used to create opportunities for young people while simultaneously promoting economic growth in the country.

Timothy Latim Honorable Mention, Urban Challenging the Norm Architecture in Uganda is typically very conservative, following an established template of construction techniques, materials and building types, and even so there is at least one major building collapse every three years. This project, a boutique mall in Muyenga, Kampala, highlights these existing norms and the need to challenge them.
