The Uganda Press Photo Award (UPPA) announces the winners of its seventh edition as well as the inaugural edition of the East African Photography Award (EAPA), and the third edition of the Young Photographer Award (YPA).
Alex Esagala‘s image was chosen as the winning photograph of the 7th edition of the Uganda Press Photo Award 2018. Judge Yasuyoshi Chiba had this to say about why the image won:
“This is quite a perfect example of a press photo image. A pulled tie stretched by the force of police officer, a smoke of tear gas on background, the widely opened mouth of resisting student – details of this single photo make us stop to think.
The work of photojournalists can be harsh but very important. Obviously, the existence of photojournalism is the counterforce to the authorities. More importantly,” he added, “it endeavors that vulnerable people are not ignored or forgotten”.
Alex Esagala is a photojournalist working with “Daily Monitor” newspaper in Kampala. He takes home a professional-level Canon EOS 5D Mark III DSLR camera kit as well as other prizes.
The 7th edition of the Uganda Press Photo Award welcomed a number of changes, the most significant being a shake-up of the UPPA’s single-picture categories. Creative, Portrait and Nature have become Urban, People, and Environment respectively. Additionally the East African Photography Award (EAPA) was introduced and replaces the Story category. This Award invites all citizens of Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Ethiopia to share their photo essays.
The Uganda Press Photo Award (UPPA) started in 2012 and since 2016 it is produced by FOTEA. Ths year our partners and sponsor include the Friedrich Ebert-Stiftung Uganda, Canon Central and North Africa (CCNA) and its Miraisha Programme, the Foreign Correspondents’ Association of Uganda (FCAU), the U.S. Embassy in Uganda, the German Embassy Kampala, British Council, Delegation of the European Union to Uganda and others.
