For Tokyo Photo 2012, we show an array of works from past recipients: intimations of a new kind of documentary image are put forth by Zhan Xiao while Chen Zhen gives corporal form to psychological travails, Zhang Jin re-examines the silk road and Chu Chu follows historical trajectories of individuals within the urban landscape. Together, these artists culminate into the sprawling, epic diorama that is Chinese life now. Thoughout the upheavals of the past half-century, Chinese artists have been able to use their extraordinary resilience and malleability in their photography. Immersed in a dominant political climate that is hostile to artistic liberty, the camera has subsumed such struggles and evolved ,photographers actively pursue their creative practices. Though much international attention remains focused on China’s rise to prominence in today’s market-driven art world, we trust in the future of Chinese photographers .
