Tod Papageorge, Six-neuf, 1975-1990

Preview

This is the first major exhibition in France of this American photographer whose career started with the street photography movement in New York in the 60s. While participating to the legacy of American documentary photography, Tod Papageorge is of this generation who emancipated the diktat of representation by giving primacy to visual sensuality. Whatever the subject he addresses, chosen for its ability to create an image and not for what it demonstrates, Papageorge goes beyond the essence of his photography to offer rich images with many shades of values. The exhibition takes its title from the tool the photographer has chosen, a medium size camera 6 by 9 cm, giving his photographs a suavity sought in the translation of lights and surfaces.
