Why Tsuiokou?
Tsuiokou emerged from a personal challenge: overcoming my natural shyness towards strangers. Approaching someone in the street is never easy, yet this fear became a powerful source of inspiration. Thus, I captured the soul of Saint-Étienne, my city, through genuine encounters.
This book gathers twenty-two unique stories. Each one recounts a real meeting, a fleeting moment of life captured from the ephemeral. The black-and-white portraits freeze the present, capturing the raw intensity of the lived moment. But life isn’t confined to a single snapshot. Therefore, I’ve added color photographs to each story, symbolizing their potential future. These color images are presented in a separate floating notebook, poetically illustrating that the future cannot be contained.

I chose black and white to capture the essence: pure, unadorned emotion. Each portrait is an open window into a soul encountered randomly on the streets. These images reflect authentic moments—profound or fleeting, but always vibrant. Behind every gaze hides a story worth telling.
Certain encounters left a profound impression on me. I recall a young woman with a subtle, almost shy smile. Initially hesitant, she ultimately opened up with surprising generosity. Her story, like the others, reminds us that behind each face lie countless narratives, often invisible at first glance.
