The festival unfolding at La Roque d’Anthéron in Provence was envisioned as a way of presenting to the public varied perspectives on the theme photo narrative. From documentary to fiction, the photographers invited to this first edition of the festival explore, tell stories, defend and share their points of view. The program includes humor, poetry, emotion, and engagement. Four artists exhibit their stories in the beautiful Cistercian Silvacane Abbey from Saturday, August 26 through Saturday, September 30, 2017.
The first artist, Corey Arnold, lives in Portland, Oregon. He is both a photographer and a fisherman. Every summer he spends two months wild salmon fishing in Bristol Bay, Alaska. The rest of the year, he accepts commissions from international news agencies, puts together exhibitions, and travels.
Amy Friend, born in 1974 in Canada, in turn, spends her time exploring beaches and hills around her house, wedged between the Detroit River and Lake St. Clair. Photography allows her to explore the relationship between the visible and the invisible.
While working on her documentaries, Hélène David stayed in the Arctic with the Iñupiaq of Alaska, and regularly sailed on the ocean for her series Marins. These immersive experiences have led her to identify the being in relation to nature.
Riita Ikonen, a contemporary Finnish artist, works on costume design, photographic performance, and postal art, as well as on collective projects jointly with Karoline Hjorth.
