In 1949, aged 22, I travelled to Paris. Overnight journeys by trains with their steam engines stimulated me to photograph the vibrant experience of racing trains. I wanted to capture impressions of fast motion of monstrous engines, of mighty steam clouds, of soot and of dust flying past. Hence, I rode mainly in the engine and on its tender and I chose techniques to blur the photographs intentionally, creating impressions rather than documenting stills. – René Groebli
