Thomas Hauser is a Berlin-based artist and photographer known for his intimate, poetic and a ‘stillness’ approach to both portraiture and fashion photography.
After studying painting in the 80’s, Thomas’s work took on a strongly photographic character before he decided to engage in fashion photography, taking fashion very seriously and including fashion into the arts.
Always striving to create the mood and atmosphere that he has in mind, Thomas emphasizes a seemingly absolute lack of emotion to better express the depth and complexity of his characters, facing their inner thoughts buried beneath the weight of societal norms.
The subject’s beauty is captured in stillness to let the dynamics be perceived through his/her gaze and inner energy. “I try to influence the atmosphere in my studio in such a way that the sitters don’t feel too comfortable. I never play music, which pretty much pulls the mood down…”
Thomas blurs the line between fashion photography and fine art… “the interaction of a wonderful dress on the right model, the right make-up, hair styling, and light can create very unique moments. […] It’s all about beauty – and capturing this beauty is just great”.
Thomas believes in truth and honesty in photography, thus favoring a straightforward and simple working process. “I gradually switched from digital to film and in the third step to black and white. The cameras I used became bigger and bigger, and black and white large format film was my preferred material for several years”.
His work has been featured in publications including Numéro, Crash, Replica Man, Another Man, Alla Carta, Autre, Heroine, Ansinth, 10Magazine, Dapper Dan and Wallpaper. He collaborates with brands such as Our Legacy, Bottega Veneta, Maison Margiela, Rimowa, Oor Studio, Sia Arnika and Alexander McQueen.
Thomas Hauser’s photographs have been exhibited in galleries and institutions worldwide. His selected publications include GIRLS SEEN, ANTIGLOSSY, JESSICA, DESIRE, AMAZONA and NOVEMBER 2 P.M.
