On October 17th in New York, Swann Auction Galleries will hold an auction of photographs and photo books. The event will be an, “examination of the intersection of photography and contemporary art,” with items from some of the biggest names in the medium, along with a selection of 19th century photo albums.

 

Some of the highlights include:

 

–Large color prints like Henry Wessel’s “Las Vegas No. 8” (Lot 318, $3,000-$4,500) and Lalla Essaydi’s “Converging Territories No. 10” (Lot 323, est. $9,000-$12,000)

–Works by Horst P. Horst, including his famous “Still Life – NY” (Lot 121, $20,000-$30,000)

–Photographs by Man Ray, including a rare portrait of James Joyce (Lot 49, $12,000-$18,000)

–Work by Nick Brandt documenting the disappearance of wildlife in East Africa (Lot 324, $15,000-$20,000 and Lot 325, $18,000-$22,000)

–Work by celebrated visual artists like Richard Prince (Lot 309, $15,000-$20,000) and James Welling (Lot 314, $6,000-$9,000)

–A series of 13 photographs by Garry Winogrand, mostly shot in California (Lot 240, $14,000-$18,000)

–A group of four vintage, signed Susan Meiselas prints from her iconic series Carnival Strippers (Lot 253, $12,000-$18,000)

–A selection of vintage color photographs by Stephen Shore (Lots 294 and 297, $2,000-$4,500)

–A series of four photographs of water towers by Bernd and Hilla Becher (Lot 273, $10,000–$15,000)

–Work by Harry Callahan, including several of his emblematic studies of Eleanor (Lots 165-168, $6,000-$9,000 and $7,000-$10,000)

–A carefully preserved album by Marc Ferrez containing 14 photographs representing the port of Rio de Janeiro (Lot 7, $40,000-$60,000)

–A group of 40 plates from Alexander Gardner’s Sketchbook of the Civil War (Lot 9, $18,000-$22,000)
