SegoviaFoto 2016 : Ana Tornel, Chrysalides

Preview

In the part of  the Festival SegoviaFoto 2016, the photographer Ana Tornel presents her series “Chrysalides” (ferrotypes wet plate Collodion) from march 18th to May 1st 2016 at Palacio de Quintanar in Ségovia (Spain).

CHRYSALIS
We can easily imagine the caterpillar and the butterfly. Ana is however drawn by the pupa, one of the most spectacular phases of metamorphose in nature. Her nymphs are human, as all along our lives we go thru mutation periods, some are physical, other psychological.
Beyond the adolescence, when we pass from childhood to adult age, our chrysalises are the feelings of doubt, tension or disruption. Their apparent fragility hide powerful and even violent strengths whose result is completely unknown to us.
The photographer attempts to capture the continuous fight between soul and body. While observing the envelope of flesh behind the lens, she tries to seize the spirit that lives inside. This operation is carried out smoothly, with the complicity of her models, who at that moments stop being model to become a person.
The chrysalis comes to symbolize Ana Tornel’s work and the ephemeral chemistry popping up among her subject, the wet collodion technique and herself. Even if the photographer is a skillful wet plater, the process would impose its law, unsettle certainties and propose a brand-new experience on unfamiliar ground. Sometimes these accidents, far away from the preconceived idea, are precisely the ones that better show the subject the way he is.
