I had wanted to photograph France since 2009. Through a happy accident, Marseille became the setting for this project, even though I would also have liked to shoot in the Alps, the Landes forest, Brest or Châteauroux. Various people, buildings and materials appeared, forcing me to find a dramaturgical commonality among them.
The man in red pants staggering under the harsh light of the Calanques becomes a contemporary Ulysses, “performing trivial feats in a state of distraction,” allowing other protagonists to inhabit that same dimension, at a crossroads between the great narratives and the banalities of life.
