A Ritual of Exile investigates the causes and consequences of normalized violence against women in Nepal. Perpetrated under the guise of Hindu tradition, this violence begins at home. Poulomi Basu followed the exile of women whose menstrual blood is considered impure. Each month, they are sent away from home, banned from public space and deprived of basic food and water for the time of their menstruation. In cities as well as in the country, Basu has accompanied these women into exile to expose this brutal ritual that provokes many deaths. Her story was rewarded the FotoEvidence Book Award 2017 and will be published as a book later this year.
