Polka Galerie (Paris) presents the collective exhibition American Families. Here is the work of Meryl Meisler. The photographer is also present in New York at The Untitled Space. The American Families exhibition is introduced as follows:
Meryl Meisler has two families. She grew up on Long Island in a Jewish family that was as wacky as it was eccentric. By day, Meryl chronicled this clan with humor and tenderness, testifying on the joyful exuberance of a community that has lived in the memory of pogroms and the Shoah. At night, she joins her adoptive family, who find themselves behind the doors of the famous Studio 54, the iconic New York nightclub.
Family photography has marked the history of photography as the SLR camera and the 35mm reel became common consumer items. Four American photographers have made it the matrix of their work, between long-term documentary reporting, daily chronicles, and bittersweet fables. Their names are Marianna Rothen, Meryl Meisler, Peggy Levison Nolan, and Shelby Lee Adams. The “American Families” exhibition brings them together on the walls of the gallery from March 22 to May 25. Polka is happy to include them among their represented artists.
