Paintings and Advertising Inscriptions from Another Time
Today, we still pass very close, on foot or in vehicle without really seeing them or even looking at them and yet, they are vestiges of activities known from another era, that of before the ” trente glorieuses “.
These ancient paintings and inscriptions, some of which still stand up to the passage of time, remain witnesses of a period of significant industrial growth, these varied shapes and colors mark the existence of many and various manufactures (automobile, food, household products for the comfort … etc).
Advertising for the most part, also painted on the walls of individual houses, they had a role of indicator in rural and urban areas, even information, one would say today advertising communication.
One can also imagine here the long precise work of the house painters strewn in the open air on scaffolding, responsible for drawing them on often difficult surfaces, on the gables of buildings in order to give them a certain relief, even a dimension appropriate to all.
In our associative photographic workshop of the APCSD in Daix in Côte d’Or, one of us, Jean-Pierre Barthélémy, launched the idea of going in search of this graphic heritage and saving it. in the curator by the still image. This is how a dozen photographers are now discovering and capturing little by little, over time, these paintings, sometimes even imprints.
They take the time to stop on the side of the road then immortalize with a click these various motifs often become pastels under the light of the seasons which follow one another and this, since the middle of the last century. To date, more than a hundred of these paintings have been saved today!
