Luis Posada, assitant director of PHotoEspana since 2010, he talks about PHotoEspana OFF Festival.
The Festival OFF has been around since the first edition of PhotoEspaña, right?
Yes, since 1998 the Festival OFF has brought together a selection of exhibitions from different galleries around Madrid, which enriches the official program with its wealth of artists and trends in photography.
Whose initiative was it? The private galleries of Madrid or PhotoEspaña?
Since the very beginning, PhotoEspaña has sought the involvement of anyone or anything that contribute to local culture, especially that of photography. This is how a selection of private galleries began participating in the Festival OFF. They were already organizing a program of photo exhibitions alongside the festival, and they showed an interest to play a bigger part. Many of those galleries have since started showing a wider range of photography. Some have even decided to exhibit only photography.
How many galleries participate in OFF?
This year we have 33 Madrid galleries, which is average when compared to previous years.
What impact has OFF PhotoEspaña had on Madrid galleries?
We here at the festival hope that it gives them greater visibility, which is why we include all the information about OFF in the festival documentation, to help steer journalists their way. We have also organized the Prix Festival OFF, awarded by an independent jury. We are convinced that visibility on an international scale is highly beneficial, and we hope that that it will strengthen their presence in the everyday cultural life of our city.
