André Villers –Picasso during Le Mystère Picasso, Nice, 1955
Founded in the beautiful city of Maastricht in 2008, the gallery relocated in 2011 to its current location in the old former port of Amsterdam.
Suite 59 Gallery is specialised and devoted to the black and white photographic image as art. The gallery initiates several exhibitions a year and cooperates with various international galleries, art foundations and museums.
“ If you don’t know the past, you can’t understand the present.”
Suite 59 Gallery collaborates with photographers who have and had a strong connection, aware and unaware with art history and developed throughout the years a portfolio of works with a forceful authentic signature.
Suite 59 Gallery presents two themes at Photo London 2022, they write:
One theme will be ‘ The Artist and his Studio’ ; The viewer will discover photographs of artists like Pablo Picasso, Francis Bacon, Jean Cocteau, David Hockney, Julian Schnabel by photographers Andre Villers, Edward Quinn, Mart Engelen and Ernst Scheidegger.
On view will be very rare big format photographs of Picasso by Andre Villers and Edward Quinn, Alberto Giacometti by Ernst Scheidegger and Julian Schnabel by Mart Engelen.
The interesting aspect is that everything and everyone is connected, the artists knew each other but also some of the photographers knew each other, a source of inspiration which continues today. And the centerpoint was of course Picasso.
So we have chosen for L’Oeil de la Photographie, A portrait of Picasso by Andre Villers.
