Bev Grant – Black Panther Party Free Breakfast Program, 1969
Brooklyn-based, Bev Grant (born 1942), produced an extensive archive of photographs from 1968 to 1972, when she was on the frontlines as a feminist and political activist in and around New York. Grant began taking photographs as part of her participation in demonstrations with the Women’s Movement. As a member of the film collective New York Newsreel, Grant gained access to spaces and became involved with groups such as the Young Lords Party, the Black Panther Party and the Poor People’s Campaign.
OSMOS will be launching Bev Grant’s first monograph at Photo London 2022: Bev Grant Photography 1968 to 1972 (OSMOS Books, New York, 2021), b & w, hardcover, 224 pages
OSMOS was co-founded in 1997 as a project space in Berlin. OSMOS was re – launched in New York by Cay Sophie Rabinowitz (former Senior Editor of Parkett and Artistic Director of Art Basel) in 2013 and has since developed into a fully integrated concept for curatorial and editorial activities.
OSMOS currently has two locations: OSMOS Address, in a Manhattan, East Village storefront that was once a saloon frequented by Emma Goldman, and OSMOS Station, in a purpose-built garage next to the former train depot of the Catskill village of Stamford, New York.
OSMOS sustains multiple operational components: OSMOS Address (project space and operational headquarters); OSMOS Magazine and OSMOS Books, OSMOS Station (artist residence and studio) and managing artist’s estates — always with a highly professional yet deeply personal approach.
OSMOS has solidified its recognition by supporting emerging artists through exhibitions with Baseera Khan, Robert Russell, Corentin Grossmann, Elvire Bonduelle, Honza Zamojski, and Mathieu Mercier alongside its solo exhibitions with pioneers such as Peter Roehr, Duane Michals, Anton Stankowski, Sibylle Bergmann, and Martin Kippenberger; as well as publishing the first monographs of Marcelo Krasilcic, Nilbar Gures, Kon Trubkovich, Wardell Milan, Eileen Quinlan, Leslie Hewitt, and Bev Grant. OSMOS has also represented the Estates of Gretchen Bender and Darrel Ellis, among others.
