Just across the street from Paramount Studios and Paris Photo LA sits Raleigh Studios, a much smaller space but a longtime home to independent producers and indie features. What a fitting place for a show catering to independent photographers. Now in its second year, Photo Independent has thrived and morphed, this year growing into three different concentrations, individual artists, galleries and book publishers.
The spirit here is friendly, the people directly attached to the art they make and the quality of the work varies from very good to excellent and exciting. Wandering the aisles here you can see plenty of work that would be right at home across the street. Photo Independent speaks to the growing number of underrepresented photographers looking for a way to break into the art world. The economics of the big galleries are stacked against them and the profusion of talent makes it ever harder to rise above the noise level. Here for a relatively modest sum you can put yourself in front of industry insiders and a few thousand people willing to spend the price of admission to look at photos. The odds are daunting but at least you can be part of the party for a few days and see if fortune smiles. Good luck everybody!
