Phoenix Art Museum : Funny Business : Photography and Humor

Preview

The Phoenix Art Museum premieres a new exhibition exploring the use of comedy in photography throughout the medium’s history. Comprising 70 photographs from the early 20th century to today, Funny Business: Photography and Humor showcases how artists have utilized visual humor to delight and entertain, as well as to resist, interrogate, and subvert societal norms and practices.

Spanning comedic genres such as slapstick, irony, absurdism, satire, and parody, Funny Business examines the mechanics of photographic humor and the strategic reasoning behind an artist’s use of comedy. Designed to make the history of photography engaging and accessible to all, the exhibition features works by renowned artists, including John Baldessari, Zig Jackson, Helen Levitt, Garry Winogrand, and more.

Co-organized with the Center for Creative Photography (CCP) in Tucson, Funny Business: Photography and Humor is on view from June 14, 2025, through January 4, 2026.
