Garden Cities
The Garden Cities project came about while studying and photographing built environments and how people live in those places. I began to create urban landscapes with a focus on how people include nature alongside structures. The project tries to answer the question about the role of “green spaces” in cities and what does it mean to have a verdant aesthetic in the built environment?
Historically people have cleared the landscape to make room to build and create new habitats. Once the structures have been constructed, vegetation was reintroduced to create a more natural and human scale environment. The cycle of clearing and building fascinated me as part of the climate change dialogue people are currently having.
While traveling across the United States I specifically looked for opportunities to juxtapose the built structures with planted or natural vegetation. As an artist I wanted to create a series that calls attention to this dichotomy.
