Immersion in AJA service of Saint Louis’s Hopital, Paris
Jennifer, Elodie, Meriem, Alexandre and Cédric are aged between 15 and 25. They all have leukaemia or lymphoma and are being treated at the haematology unit for teenagers and young adults at Saint-Louis hospital in Paris. The unit – the first of its kind in France – was set up in 2011 to provide special care for these patients, taking their medical and psycho-social needs into consideration. Everything is done to keep any feelings of solitude and isolation at bay. As they approach adulthood, these young people see their lives governed by treatment, day and night, dreams and despair. They also take part in a number of group activitives and although they are all diferent, they share a single goal: getting better and getting out. Struggling with nausea and urinary pain, Alexandre is revising for an entrance exam to France’s “Sciences-Po” political science institute, while Meriam is stuck in her sterile room, yearning to hold her two-month-old baby. At the same time, Jennifer is worn out by chemotherapy and won’t be getting up to make pancakes with the others today.
