Paris Photo opens today, here are some of our “Coups de Coeur” / Favorites and the editorial of the director, Florence Bourgeois.
“We are particularly happy to see you again finally! this year, for the 24th edition of Paris Photo. 2021 is special in more ways than one: new location, at the Grand Palais Ephémère, the eco-responsible building at the foot of the Eiffel Tower, a new digital platform offering visibility complementary to the works, accessible to all, wherever they are are in the world, benefiting from an exclusive programming, and a new momentum in Paris, cradle of photography, thanks to our institutions.
Paris Photo brings together this year 147 galleries from 28 countries. 63% of them are foreign, that speak of the meaningfulness of the desire and the need to meet again. 30 publishers complete the offer, coming from 9 countries, around whom will take place the book signatures, the Artist Talks and the nomination of the Photobook Awards, with Aperture. Curiosa, our sector dedicated to emergence, gives pride of place to young artists, under the aegis of Shoair Mavlian, curator, who chose 20 solo shows, while 4 Carte Blanche laureates will exhibit their portfolios at the fair, and will be honored for several weeks in one of the main Parisian train stations.
The program within Paris Photo offers this year again a rich program, consisting of the presentation of part of the private collection of J.P. Morgan, works by Almudena Romero, artist in residence for BMW, the work of Olivier Cullman for Pernod Ricard, on the theme of friendliness, in tune with current events. Other partners accompany us, contributing to the promotion of the medium, showing under different formats, or sharing in our Conversation Platform.
For the 4th year, Paris Photo renews its commitment to women photographers, with the support of the Ministry of Culture and Kering / Women in Motion. Thanks to the curatorial office of Nathalie Herschdorfer and to paths selected on the fair and on the Online Viewing Room, an additional visibility is given to female artists, in an attempt to catch up. The Cnap supports us in this process, granting an acquisition budget for the benefit of women’s works offered at the fair. Some of the previous acquisitions of the Cnap will also be exhibited at the fair, Corpus, with seven female artists dealing with body and identity. Finally, our Elles x Paris Photo site, fed regularly since the beginning of the year, gives voice to women by presenting interviews with artists from all over the world. A necessary readjustment …
We are proud of our commitment to support, together, the actors in the field of photography, and look forward to seeing you again to enjoy, exchange, discover, and share!
