“Why are people sleeping?” they asked me, and still do. I was interested to discover in my photographs a fact so natural, so daily, so universal, and yet repressed, to which we abandon ourselves almost in secret, usually in protected places, because we know that it leaves us defenseless to the arbitrary actions of others. There is life and death in sleep and in photography.
The poet is right: to sleep, perchance to dream.
