When was the last time you bought a newspaper or magazine from a newsstand on the street? Was it yesterday, 6 months ago, 6 years ago? The NYC landscape is changing, it is always changing, for good and bad. Newsstands, a corner staple of urban life are losing the unique character each has built over the years. The grit, the grime, the patina. A few years ago, a Spanish company Cemusa won a contract to replace NYC newsstands with uniform stainless steel and glass boxes; replacing the sometimes funky, sometimes downtrodden, cobbled together structures that have existed for decades.
This is a historical, urban landscape project; stopping to look at the street stands and the people that operate them before they are no longer here.
Geoff Green is a photographer based in Manhattanʼs West Village, he thrives on the energy and creativity of New York City. Born and raised in Suffern, NY; he entered the field as Jay Maiselʼs first assistant where he gleaned a hands on education traveling to such varied places as South Africa and Dubai and gaining entrée to the art world of New York City and beyond.
