Among the photographers present in the publication, we decided to highlight Antoine Verglas with this interview from Normal Magazine.
Can you describe your style, like a good friend does?
Antoine Verglas: My images experience the beauty of women in a natural and sensual way.
What are your beauty criteria?
Antoine Verglas: The criteria of beauty, as a general rule, have evolved enormously in recent years with androgeny, plus size models, transgender… I try to be as inclusive as possible when I seek beauty in one of my subjects and models.
Your favorite pastime?
Antoine Verglas: No doubt, taking pictures!
To be a photographer is to be a voyeur?
Antoine Verglas: A photographer must be a bit of a voyeur, an image hunter. He is there to capture stolen moments and immortalize them. Even if behind the photograph there must be a story that you cannot put into words.
How did you become a photographer?
Antoine Verglas: I always say it was an accident. But in fact it’s a real passion for fashion magazines and people… After a brief noteworthy stint as a television host on France 5, in the mid-1980s, in France and a trial as a photographer agent, I decided to be a photographer myself by training with my model girlfriend at the time and her friends. And it started like that!
What is your definition of bad taste in art?
Antoine Verglas: Bad taste in art is very subjective, it’s really a matter of personal opinion influenced by different factors such as education or your own exposure to different art forms. What I consider to be bad taste may appeal to someone who has had a very different background from mine. Without judgement.
How do you use the nude or nudity in your work?
Antoine Verglas: I love the human body, its shapes and curves. When making beauty images, a naked body can magnify them.
What do you want people to see in your work?
Antoine Verglas: In all modesty, I just hope they enjoy it!
How do you choose your model?
Antoine Verglas: I don’t have a typical model, I’m always looking for new looks and interesting characters!
Is there a part of lies in your creation?
Antoine Verglas: My camera never lies, I just try to embellish reality!
A bedside book?
Antoine Verglas: Rich Dad Poor Dad, by Robert Kiyosaki.
Your favorite movies?
Antoine Verglas: Amadeus, Barry Lindon, Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs, Scarface, Jaws, The Godfathers series… there are so many!
Antoine Verglas was born in Paris in 1962. He began his career on the other side of the camera, working as the host of a popular French TV show. In 1990, he moved to New York with his camera and his new vision. Courage and perseverance paid off, with a series of documentary-style photos for Elle magazine featuring some of the biggest names in modeling. Photographing the greatest models of the era: Stephanie Seymour, Penelope Cruz, Eva Mendes, Gisèle Bundchen, Linda Evangelista, Naomi Campbell, Claudia Schiffer and Cindy Crawford at home in very personal portraits as they rose to celebrity status was his big breakthrough, he is the founder of the style that has become the Verglas signature. This intimate style of capturing the person behind the camera has led to the fast pace of work that Verglas now produces for the world’s top fashion magazines. His photographs have appeared in Elle, Esquire, GQ, Maxim, Sports Illustrated and Vogue. Antoine Verglas now spends his time between Saint-Barth, Paris, Montauk and New York.
