Welcome to Yosemite “One day I was in the British Museum looking for inspiration. I came across a collection of photographs of birds in the wild. The transparencies were old and exhibited on a lightbox. I guess that they had been there for so many years that the colours had started to fade. I’d wanted to go and photograph Yosemite for ages. My original idea was to recreate a modern version of Ansel Adams amazing landscapes. I wanted to find the very same landscapes and photograph them in glorious colour. When I arrived in Yosemite I was struck by its awesome majesty… I remembered the bird photographs that I had seen in the British Museum and decided to start photographing the area with those images in mind. Until quite recently I shot everything on film. This series was shot digitally on an 80 mega pixel back and a beautifully engineered wood and metal camera called an Alpa. As with all my work I wanted to keep the traditional feeling of film. I spent days in my London studio perfecting the look and made amazing 1.5 meters wide prints. These were exhibited at Colette Paris in a show entitled ‘Selected Summers’. The series also went on the win Gold and Best in show at London’s Association of Photographers awards and was also awarded in the Creative Review Photo annual.” Springtime in Japan “The cherry Blossom in Japan is a beautiful and elusive occurrence. The full blossom only lasts for around two weeks so to catch the colour in full swing the timing has to be perfect. It took two separate trips to Japan to make this series. Each time I flew to a different area depending on where the blossom was at it’s best. The Blossom was the only preconceived idea I had for this series. Japan is such a visual Feist and I wanted to be able to photograph anything that caught my eye. The result is an eclectic collection of images that somehow capture the freshness and happiness of that time of year. I also worked digitally on this series. Working with a large format camera I carefully printed the images to retain the ‘on film’ look that I love so much. All these prints are carefully editioned and archived at my London studio. They went on to win awards at the AOP, Creative Review and PDN annual.
