Nancy Oliveri, The Assassin Flower

Preview

This series explores the secrets of flowers through the visual language of photography. It captures the meaning, poetry, drama, terror, beauty and sexuality of one of the most magnificent and mysterious offerings on the planet. The title Assassin Flower refers to the toxic plant Brugnansia, also known as Angels Trumpet which causes hallucinations and death if ingested and has been associated with zombie mythology. The common name Angels Trumpet refers to the hanging blossom which resembles a lush, gold hanging trumpet, but it could also refer to the sound of welcoming angels after consumption. These compositions are created using natural light and include Birds of Paradise blossoms, sea glass, ornamental grass, green berries and an assortment of found flora and decayed blossoms.

Nancy Oliveri will be exhibiting 19 of her flora still life photographs in the Barcelona Foto Biennial, which is the 5th Biennial of Art & Documentary Photography October 4-21 2018 at the Nau Bostik Ferran, Barcelona as part of the Julia Margaret Cameron awards for women Photographers.

She is an award winning American artist born in Providence Rhode Island in 1958 and maintains a studio in the Gowanus section of Brooklyn. She has exhibited her photographic work internationally and in the US including Budapest, Berlin, Barcelona & Istanbul.
