“In all my work I try to mirror what it is like to be human. The emotions we encounter from day to day. There is so much beauty in vulnerability but popular imagery “air brushes” the shadow from our lives in the hope of pushing away what is inevitable. Whether I am working with Landscape, Bodies or Portraits, the beauty and nakedness of our inner conditions of being human are alluded to. These portraits present these well known actors in a way they have not been seen before. ”
Nadav Kander

For a special London issue of The New York Times Magazine published in the magazine’s March 4 issue, Katy Ryan, director of photography, asked Nadav Kander to make portraits of esteemed British actors : Anne-Marie Duff, Bertie Carvel, Dame Eileen Atkins, Daniel Kaluuya, Judi Dench, Mark Rylance, Patrick Stewart, Simon Russell Beale and Vinette Robinson. It was a bold and unusual experience for Kander to search for undiscovered emotional territory in these virtuosic performers. They are powerful portraits rich with emotion, expression, screams and gestures. Shot in dramatic black-and-white, the portraits reveal the transcendence of Nada Kander’s philosophy of photography.

Based in London, Nadav Kander has contributed to several magazines (Another Man, Dazed & Confused, Rolling Stone, The Sunday Times Magazine, The New York Times) and worked for major brands (Absolut, Adidas, Air France, Dell, English National Ballet, Hyundai, Levis, Lexus, Mercedes, Nike, Powerade, Puma). His photographs appear in the permanent collections of the National Portrait Gallery and the V&A Museum.
