This exhibition presented as part of Lumière Nordiques under the curatorship of Gabriel Bauret, offers an original journey in the Nordic countries through the works of Marie Sjøvold, Ole Marius Joergensen and Terje Abusdal, three photographers from the same generation.
In parallel with the exhibition Normans. Migrants, conquerors, innovators, retracing the history of the presence of the Norman peoples and their heritage, the Museum of Fine Arts welcomes three contemporary Norwegian photographers. For several years, the painting of artists from northern countries has been revisited by French museums. It is a question of defining an aesthetic identity specific to this region, through the form or the subjects treated. These exhibitions complement a strong interest in Nordic literature and cinema. Photographic creation also continues to impose itself for its own qualities and finds resonance in France. This exhibition accompanies this movement, responding to the desire of discovering new territories of visual creation. Marie Sjøvold, Ole Marius Joergensen and Terje Abusdal appropriate the photographic medium here in different ways, moving between documentary and fiction, to extending the artistic gesture by using installations. Marie Sjøvold captures very sensitive snapshots in the intimacy of a family world, Ole Marius Joergensen delivers a fiction – the loneliness of a traveling salesman – based on stagings with cinematic resonance and Terje Abusdal leads a documentary project that questions the heritage and identity of a community from a neighboring country. The testimony and the narration, associated with a visual writing composing with the color, participate in the very particular universe in which these artists lead us. These three photographers from the same generation thus offer complementary approaches to their territory: they invite us on a journey to a Nordic country beyond the landscapes and lights that usually characterize it.
