The 902 autochromes of the Section photographique de l’armée (SPA), held by the Médiathèque du Patrimoine et de la Photographie (MPP), have all been digitized and are available online on the Mémoire database. Produced during the First World War by SPA operators Paul Castelnau, Fernand Cuville and Albert Samama-Chikli, they document in color life at the front and the devastation of the war. Ronan Guinée, curator of the War collection at the MPP, has published on our website a series of articles that breaks down this corpus and allows readers to explore it in depth. This work follows the research carried out by ECPAD on its own collection of war Autochromes, complementary to that of the MPP, and foreshadows a synthesis volume, edited by Nathalie Boulouch, due to be published soon by Éditions Liénart.
