‘Beyond established boundaries’ – the avantgarde of the 20th century ignored traditional categories to enlarge the scope of possibilities of aesthetic expression. The buzzword was ‘Gesamtkunstwerk’ (‘the total work of art’), a concept that also embraced design in fashion, music, theatre and utilitarian objects for daily life. A host of artists – Fortunato Depero, Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, Ernst Heckel, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Man Ray, Dali, Meret Oppenheim, Lucio Fontana, Alexander Calder, Sonja Delaunay … to name just a few – advanced into new fields to manifest their ideas in the field of jewellery, furniture, fashion….. On the side of what are called ‘applied arts’ – utilitarian or functional arts – trends have emerged in reaction to artistic events of the era; they have conquered new freedoms for their works to match those momentous events. Our association is based on this historical legacy that bridged arts. The focus is on crossing boundaries. Consequently, the gallery will not exclude such media as photography, sculpture, painting or design. On the contrary, we are concerned with building bridges, showing correspondences between disciplines, questioning conventional value judgements and, above all, offering top quality and cutting-edge artistic potential.
