Born in the United States to a French mother and a Dutch father, Mark Steinmetz has been influenced by both European and American culture. Apart from a few trips to Italy and Paris, most of his work concerns the American South, where Steinmetz moved long ago, first to Knoxville, Tennessee, then to Athens, Georgia.
While it remains recognizable, Steinmetz’s South is not the idealized version seen in the work of other artists. This South is rooted in reality. Steinmetz loves it, “for the weeds growing in the sidewalk cracks, for the humidity, and for its chaos.”
