Marie Baronnet: A Tornado on a Warpath

Moore, Oklahoma, May 2013.

On May 20, an EF5 tornado (on a scale of 1 to 5) touched down near Oklahoma City. For the next forty minutes, it destroyed everything in its path.

Standing unsteadily on the debris, I look out upon the destruction. The trees, those that remained standing, are leafless, their bark sanded down to their pith. The birds have all gone. And everything that man has planted and accumulated—houses, cars, billboards, furniture, toys, photos—have been sucked into the air and cast back onto the ground in disorder, creating an unexpected collage. The monster had withdrawn to the skies, and I went on walking through its aftermath.
