Magnums Photos has joined forces with UNICEF to raise awareness about a growing social issue in Mozambique: while the country is rich in oil and coal, the future of its children seems to have been entirely forgotten.
Five photographers from the agency, Ian Berry Chris Steele-Perkins, Alex Webb, Eli Reed and Patrick Zachmann have documented their lives, creating a vast collection of photographs, audio and video recordings presented on the Unicef website along with several alarming statistics.
One figure to remember is that 50% of the population of 24 million people in Mozambique are under 18. UNICEF has launched a fundraiser to help the children of Mozambique build a future, with a focus not only on health and education—crucial issues in a country with the highest infant mortality rate in the world—but also on the fight against sexual abuse and for freedom of expression.
More than ever, participation is a human right and the source of equitable development. In his video documentary, filled with laughter and warm African colors, Alex Webb looks at the initiatives of the Participatory Child Rights Media Network, which has created a media program where children can express their views and feelings in a participatory, playful and public space. Along with the visual campaign, this media network confirms the ability of the image to change the world, without necessarily showing the tragedy itself.
