When it comes to declining a profession, Sandra Reinflet venture: inventor of true stories.
The artist uses photography and text to stage reality – assuming that everything is fiction as soon as you choose a frame.
She has notably published four books (including Ne parle pas aux inconnus, published by editions JC Lattès), was the 2020 winner of the Roger Pic Prize of the SCAM and the Carré sur Seine Members’ Prize for the photographic work presented here and exhibited. at MAC Créteil in the spring 2021.
In 2014, her series Qui a tué Jacques Prévert ? (editions of La Martinière) was distinguished by the Talent Exchange.
From Port Moresby to Saint-Denis, Sandra Reinflet carries out numerous cultural actions to amplify the voices of those who are not heard, or not enough. She has also just obtained the residency for creative writing in Seine-Saint-Denis for the year 2021-2022.
How can one live as a painter, dancer, director or poet in the middle of the Mauritanian desert, under the Iranian theocracy, in the Papuan jungle, Malagasy misery or Brazilian conservatism? How to make art its profession when it is the last priority of the government, when no distributing structure exists or when it is muzzled by censorship?
The VoiE.X series offers portraits of artists who pose the act of creation as an act of resistance in countries where making a living from art is a challenge. As the details are hidden as much in the vanishing lines as in those of the face, Sandra Reinflet takes her portraits at a wide angle. The artist appears both isolated and at the center of the landscape, a metaphor for the place he occupies there.
A way of sketching an intimate geography where the subject and his environment are linked, willingly or by force.
Far from being miserable, these images thus suggest that coercion is not an insurmountable wall, but an incitement to circumvent, even a diversion. In any case, to action.
At a time when freedom of expression is being called into question almost everywhere, this work offers, beyond its graphic aspect, a political reflection. Since it is complex to create, artists become resilient, then resistant. To value their struggle is to value the act of creation as a whole and to encourage those voices that are not heard, or not enough.
VoiE.X, artists under constraints, this series is the 2020 winner of the Roger Pic Prize of the SCAM.
